A Conversation about the Road to Healing with Integrative Cancer Care When Confronted with a Life-Changing Disease
Today, many patients are discovering the value of experiencing support while undergoing and recovering from the harsh effects of treatment for cancer. Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. In the process, chemo can also damage healthy cells, causing side effects.
While Chemotherapy disrupts the processes the cancer cells need to multiply and thrive, it cannot distinguish between fast-growing cancer cells and fast-growing healthy cells. When the chemo damages healthy cells, one can experience side effects. Among them are damage to the skin cells, hair follicles, the soft tissue that lines the body’s canals and organs in the digestive, respiratory and reproductive systems - the mucous membrane, blood-forming cells in bone marrow.
While damaged cancer cells die, normal cells can repair themselves. Most people receive chemotherapy spread out over several sessions, or rounds, to give their cells time to repair. Allowing the body time to recover can make side effects more manageable.
