What Women Should Know About Prostate Cancer

Guest: Steven Thompson, Co-Chair, UCSF Black Men's Health Committee | Cancer Survivor & Advocate

We talk a lot on this show about the bodies of African American women — but this week, we're widening the lens. Because the truth is, the health of the men in our lives is deeply tied to our own.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Black men in the United States. Black men are diagnosed at significantly higher rates than white men, and they are more than twice as likely to die from the disease. Yet most men diagnosed do not die from it — especially when it's caught early, and especially when the women around them know enough to ask the right questions and push for screening.

That's exactly why this episode matters.

Our guest, Steven Thompson, is Co-Chair of the UCSF Black Men's Health Committee and a cancer survivor and advocate who has spent years helping other Black men face this disease with information, community, and courage. In this conversation, Steven joins us to talk about his own diagnosis journey, what he wishes more women understood about prostate cancer, and how to have the hard conversations with the fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons in our lives — the ones who may be avoiding the doctor, avoiding the test, or avoiding the conversation altogether.

This episode is for every daughter who wants her father to get screened. Every wife who isn't sure how to bring it up. Every woman who wants to support the health of men in her life - spouses, fathers, sons, lovers.

Tune in to Episode 44 of Love Letters to Our Bodies — because loving our bodies also means loving the bodies of the men who show up for us.

Love Letters to Our Bodies is a podcast of Moyo Institute, Inc. — a Bay Area nonprofit elevating holistic health and consciousness for women navigating cancer journeys and beyond.
